Remote

Work from anywhere

Keep the job. Change the view. Roles that don’t care which country your desk is in.

What this path actually is

A remote role separates your work from your address. Some are open worldwide, some are fenced to a country or a time zone band, and the difference matters more than any other detail on the listing — a "remote" job that quietly requires US work authorisation is not a job you can take to Lisbon.

That is why every remote listing here carries a Geo-Flex score: a read on how portable the role actually is, based on what the employer put in writing about location, time zone, and work authorisation. It turns a vague "remote-friendly" into something you can filter on.

Roles people take on this path

  • Customer support and success

Frequently worldwide, often shift-based, and one of the shortest routes into a distributed team without prior remote experience.

  • Software engineering and QA

The deepest pool of genuinely location-free roles, though the senior end competes globally.

  • Content, copywriting, and SEO

Async by nature. Portfolio counts for more than location.

  • Design and product

Usually expects four or more hours of overlap with the core team.

  • Operations, bookkeeping, and virtual assistance

Steady demand, clear deliverables, and rarely tied to a country.

  • Sales development and account management

Often fenced to the customer’s region rather than the company’s.

Where remote workers actually base themselves

Portugal
An established digital nomad visa, a large existing community, and EU access once you are resident.
Spain
The digital nomad visa carries a reduced tax rate for the first years if you qualify.
Mexico
A generous temporary resident route, US-friendly time zones, and low cost of living outside the capital.
Thailand and Vietnam
Long-standing remote hubs with the lowest cost base on this list, at the price of a hard time zone gap with the Americas.
Estonia
The original digital nomad visa, plus e-Residency if you invoice as a company.
Colombia
A nomad visa, a short flight from North America, and full overlap with US hours.

What it asks of you

  • Evidence you can deliver without supervision — freelance, contract, or self-directed work all count
  • A stated time zone and availability window, near the top of your resume
  • Fluent async writing. Most remote miscommunication is a writing problem, and employers screen for it
  • Fluency in the usual stack: Slack, video calls, a project tracker, shared docs
  • Work authorisation that matches the listing — check this before anything else
  • A setup that survives a bad week: reliable power, backup internet, somewhere quiet to take a call

What people get wrong about it

Remote means you can work from any country.

Most remote roles are fenced by work authorisation, tax residency, or time zone. Worldwide roles exist but are the minority, which is exactly why they are marked separately here.

Your employer will not mind where you log in from.

Moving countries can create payroll, tax, and permanent-establishment problems for the company. Ask before you move, not after.

Remote work is less competitive because there are more jobs.

A worldwide listing draws applicants from every continent. The pool grows faster than the postings do.

A tourist visa is fine if the work is online.

Some countries tolerate it, several now explicitly do not, and the rules changed in a lot of places recently. The Route Planner tracks the current position per country.
