Sourcegraph is hiring a Tech Lead for its Code Plane team, the group that owns the products letting developers and AI agents take action on code at scale across large codebases: Batch Changes, Agentic Batch Changes, Code Monitors, Code Insights and the src CLI. Sourcegraph is a globally distributed, remote company and states that it hires almost anywhere in the world; for this role it prefers candidates in Europe or in US Eastern time zones, and working hours must overlap with CEST for at least 20 hours per week. This is a hands-on IC5 leadership role for someone who has built things that agents or other programs call, not just used agents to build things, and who wants to set the technical direction of an agentic development product line. Sourcegraph publishes transparent pay bands: IC5 starting salaries are USD 192,000 in Zone 2 and USD 144,000 in Zone 3, plus meaningful equity and generous benefits. Set the technical direction and drive the roadmap for the Code Plane product surfaces (Batch Changes, Agentic Batch Changes, Code Monitors, Code Insights, src CLI). Within the first month build relationships, learn the product surfaces, meet cross-functional partners and join the on-call rotation. Within three months own meaningful slices end to end, lead roadmap planning, strengthen team engineering practices and mentor teammates. Within six months be the recognized technical visionary for Code Plane and guide the department's direction. Partner with Product and Design from concept to launch, make architectural decisions where no established patterns exist and revise them based on evidence, define and measure quality standards for ambiguous systems, translate customer symptoms into technical bets, and keep the team unblocked across multiple product surfaces.
8+ years of professional software engineering experience. Fluency across backend and frontend: Go, TypeScript, SvelteKit, React, GraphQL APIs, PostgreSQL, Docker and Kubernetes. Strong technical background enabling architectural guidance and trade-off analysis. Proven experience building end-user product features, ideally developer tools, AI/agent products or CLIs. You have built something that agents or other programs call (MCP servers, agent SDKs, tool surfaces, CLIs for non-human callers), not just something you used an agent to build. Hands-on experience using and reasoning about coding agents such as Amp, Claude Code or Cursor, with strong opinions about what good looks like when humans and agents share a workflow. Async-first communication skills and distributed team experience. Strongly preferred: orchestrating autonomous work at scale with failure recovery and cost management, owning inherited services with paying customers, raising engineering standards, and prior Team or Tech Lead experience. Location: Sourcegraph hires almost anywhere in the world; Europe or US Eastern time zones preferred, and working hours must overlap with CEST for at least 20 hours per week.
