Rauðasandur Sheep Farm (Workaway Host)
Ástþór hosts Workaway volunteers on his small sheep farm in Rauðasandur, in the Westfjords of Iceland -- a remote, peaceful rural setting with around 80 sheep plus a cat and dog.
Work is light: no more than 2-3 hours per day, covering animal care, farm maintenance, light gardening, and seasonal tasks (the sheep roam during summer). Basic handiwork like driving nails or screws is expected, along with occasional heavier lifting.
Unlike most work exchanges, this host offers both accommodation AND payment -- a wage aligned with Icelandic minimum-wage standards, on top of a private room in the host's home (shared bathroom and kitchen) with all meals provided. Good WiFi and streaming access are available, and camper van parking is offered for those who prefer it.
Minimum stay is at least a few months. Fluent English is required. This listing is not visa sponsored -- you are responsible for your own Icelandic entry/work-permit arrangements (Iceland is in the EEA, so EU/EEA citizens can work freely; non-EEA citizens would need to independently arrange a work permit, which this small family host does not handle). Apply directly through the host's Workaway listing.
