Senior Systems Engineer

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and Jetpack, is hiring a Senior Systems Engineer. Automattic is a fully remote company operating 30 private data centers across 30 locations on 6 continents, and hires globally with no stated country restriction.

You will help maximize service availability and uptime through proactive planning and automation, optimize performance for infrastructure serving billions of monthly page views, ensure security and data integrity through monitoring and disaster recovery practices, and work to reduce friction for developers shipping software.

Requirements: experience maintaining large Nginx setups with advanced routing, load balancing, and high availability; extensive MySQL/MariaDB deployment experience at scale; PHP application debugging at scale; solid understanding of filesystems, networking, and kernel internals; experience managing complex public-facing web hosting systems; and strong architectural and prototyping ability.

Compensation: $120,000-$180,000+ USD, paid in local currency, with pay potentially exceeding the stated range depending on impact and experience.

The role involves roughly 2-3 weeks of team-meetup travel per year (post-pandemic norm at Automattic), disclosed here as a real but modest travel expectation rather than a location restriction.
