Ski / Snowboard Instructor – Club Med Resorts Japan

Club Med is hiring Ski and Snowboard Instructors for its resorts in Japan, on a fixed-term seasonal contract. Job ID R-47190, Sports job family, based in the Sapporo area of Hokkaido.

WHY THIS ONE IS UNUSUAL

Most ski season work advertised to an international audience is in the French Alps and requires EU right to work. This is Japan, and Club Med lists it as open to residents of twenty six countries:

Japan, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Canada, Chile, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Italy, South Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom and United States.

For anyone outside the EU who has been shut out of Alps chalet work since Brexit, this is one of the few genuinely open routes into a ski season.

Hokkaido is also among the best places in the world to teach on snow. The region is known for consistent deep powder through the winter months.

WHAT THE ROLE INVOLVES

Ski lessons
• Instructing group and private lessons at varying levels as assigned
• Continually improving your own skiing and riding, teaching skill and knowledge
• Greeting and assisting guests in a friendly, helpful and respectful manner
• Following the Employee Handbook and ski and snowboard procedures, including grooming, dress code and behaviour standards
• Staying across information from ski school boards, WeChat and required meetings
• Supplying and maintaining personal or company ski and board equipment in safe, functional condition
• Cooperating with other services and colleagues
• Looking for ways to better serve guests, the Ski School and Club Med resorts

Health and safety
• Keeping skier and snowboarder safety the top priority while riding and teaching
• Promptly reporting harmful equipment or situations to your supervisor
• Reporting safety accidents and incidents immediately
• Following all company and department safety policies
• Respecting resort waste management rules, limiting electricity and water use, and following rules for handling dangerous products

HOW YOU ARE MEASURED

Club Med publishes the KPIs for this role, which is rare and useful:

• Client: guest satisfaction, and responsibility for ski and snowboarding safety
• Business: professional teaching, and promoting resort services including private lessons based on guest needs
• People: cooperating with other instructors across ski school and resort activities, and working as a good team player in the village

WORKING FOR CLUB MED

Club Med invented the all-inclusive holiday and runs around 70 resorts worldwide. Resort staff are known as G.O (Gentle Organizer) and G.E (Gentle Employee).

Room and board are provided for a fixed fee deducted from salary, so accommodation and meals are handled. Staff also get access to resort facilities and preferential rates on excursions, spa services and the boutique.

Most people do their first season in or near their country of residence. After that, a career manager discusses mobility with you, opening the possibility of moving to resorts in Europe, Africa, the West Indies, the Indian Ocean, Asia, or North and South America. Contracts are seasonal or fixed-term and are renewed across seasons.
