Software Engineering
Web Frontend Engineer – JS, CSS, React, Flutter
Canonical
Description
Canonical publishes Ubuntu, the Linux platform behind a large share of the world's public cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise infrastructure. The company is founder-led, profitable, and genuinely distributed: 1,100+ colleagues across 75+ countries with very few office-based roles, and most people working from home since 2004.
**The role**
Canonical is hiring a Web/UI Engineer to build data-rich, reliable interfaces for its enterprise products. These frontends are the company's face to its users, built with JavaScript, CSS, React and Flutter.
There is a central team maintaining an open-source React toolkit and the Vanilla Framework presentation layer, both of which exist to keep the products consistent and to help other open-source projects build performant, accessible interfaces that hold up across varied layouts. REST APIs handle communication, and Canonical treats API design as a real part of the work rather than an afterthought.
Flutter is the newer thread here. Canonical sees it as a way to unify desktop and web development, and is deliberately growing the team's exposure to it, with roles across both web and Ubuntu engineering carrying that specialism. For anyone wanting to build Flutter depth on a genuinely large open-source codebase, that is an unusual opening.
**What the role entails**
- Designing and implementing well-tested, well-documented software in web technologies or Flutter
- Debugging and fixing issues your users encounter
- Taking part in code and architectural reviews
- Collaborating with the community and colleagues on technical specifications
- Contributing to technical documentation with the aim of making it best in class
- Looking for improvements to engineering and operations practice
- Deploying and operating the services your team builds
- Supporting your product through technical advocacy
**What they are looking for**
- Exceptional academic record from both high school and university
- Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or STEM, or a convincing account of your alternative path
- Experience designing and writing high-quality web technologies
- Genuine enthusiasm for TypeScript, React or Flutter
- An eye for accessibility and performance
- Experience with Linux, ideally Debian or Ubuntu
- Professional written and spoken English
- Curiosity, flexibility, accountability and self-motivation
- Willingness to travel twice a year for company events of up to two weeks
**Nice to have**
- Container technology such as LXD, Docker or Kubernetes
- Strong attention to detail in user-centric UI work
- REST API design, development and governance
- Performance engineering and security experience
**Compensation and benefits**
- **$48,000–$70,000 USD** for the entry-level band, US-based candidates. Canonical notes the early interview stage establishes your level, and a different range applies if you are considered at another level
- Performance-driven annual bonus or commission on top of base
- Distributed work with twice-yearly in-person team sprints
- USD 2,000 personal learning and development budget per year
- Annual compensation review and recognition rewards
- Annual holiday leave, maternity and paternity leave
- Employee Assistance Programme
- Priority Pass and travel upgrades for long-haul company events
**Three things to know before applying**
**AI use disqualifies your application.** The form requires you to confirm you used only your own words. Plagiarism or generated content ends it.
**The academic screening is unusual.** Expect to state how you ranked in high-school mathematics and your native language, on bands reaching "top 0.01% in the region," and to justify those against national scoring systems. You will also select your degree grading system from a long list, with "No University degree" available as an option.
**Travel is a firm requirement.** You must confirm you can attend internal events two to four times a year, lasting one to two weeks, in locations likely to need international travel, visas and vaccinations.
The listing also asks you to describe a production project you are proud of, or a contribution to a web framework — worth preparing rather than improvising.
