Igalia
Igalia is a worker-owned open source consultancy best known for its deep, long-running contributions to major browser engines like Chromium, WebKit, and Gecko, working directly with standards bodies to shape how the web platform evolves. We are hiring a Web Platform Engineer to implement web standards inside large, complex open-source browser engines and to work hands-on with standards bodies writing and testing new specifications.
In this role you will do systems-level programming in C++ and related languages, working on real production browser engine code rather than toy examples or isolated prototypes. A significant part of the job is participating in the standards process itself: proposing changes, building consensus among different browser vendors and stakeholders who often have competing priorities, and making sure that what gets specified can actually be implemented consistently across engines. This is deep, patient, collaborative work, closer to open source maintainership than typical product engineering.
We are looking for someone with experience in areas like web platform internals, multimedia, embedded devices, compilers, networking, or general systems programming. Prior C++ experience is genuinely not required if you have strong systems programming instincts and are willing to learn; what matters more is the ability to reason carefully about complex, high-stakes codebases and to work well in a consensus-driven, collaborative environment where you don't control every decision unilaterally.
Igalia is a worker-owned cooperative, which shapes how the company operates day to day: decisions are made collectively, and the culture reflects that egalitarian structure rather than a typical corporate hierarchy. The role is remote-friendly with no stated geographic restriction, consistent with how Igalia hires across its team, though the company is headquartered in A Coruña, Spain for anyone who prefers an in-person option.
If you want to work on the actual guts of the browsers billions of people use every day, inside a genuinely worker-owned company with real flexibility on where you are based, this is a strong fit. Apply directly through Igalia's official careers page with your CV and a cover letter describing your relevant experience.
