Senior/Staff/Principal Engineer

Canonical, the company behind Ubuntu, is hiring Senior/Staff/Principal Engineers to work on open source projects. Canonical has been fully distributed since founding and explicitly states "Home based - Worldwide" for this role, confirming remote opportunities for engineers "in every time zone."

You will lead the design and architecture of impactful open source projects, write code in Golang, Rust, Python, C/C++, or TypeScript/React, mentor colleagues and provide technical leadership, collaborate with globally distributed teams, debug issues and produce high-quality fixes, and contribute to technical documentation.

Requirements: an exceptional academic record from high school and university, a CS/STEM undergraduate degree (or a compelling alternative narrative), deep experience with Go, Rust, Python, or C, demonstrated technical leadership with software teams, strong English communication skills, and the ability to travel twice a year for company events (up to two weeks each) — disclosed here as a real, recurring travel commitment rather than a hidden catch.
