Key initiatives include reducing infrastructure costs, improving data growth controls, standardizing database services, rebuilding the self-managed upgrade experience and contributing to company-wide datastore strategy, including Cells partitioning. The role is posted for Remote Canada and Remote United States. GitLab states: "All of our roles are remote, however some roles may carry specific location-based eligibility requirements." Salary range for US residents is $230,400 to $345,600 USD.

Establish direction and long-range plans aligned with company strategy and own database capacity and availability outcomes for GitLab.com. Coach three Engineering Managers and develop Staff-plus engineers into leaders. Drive cross-division technical decisions using data, prioritize database platform investments with Product, manage hiring and organization design across regions, set quarterly OKRs, manage infrastructure budgets with FinOps, and serve as an escalation point for database incidents.
Experience leading managers of managers, including coaching newer managers. Extensive hands-on PostgreSQL expertise at scale, including capacity planning, upgrades, replication and performance optimization. Experience supporting self-managed software and leading backend engineering teams applying site reliability practices such as SLOs, on-call, incident management and cost management. Clear written communication in an asynchronous, handbook-first environment and experience leading globally distributed remote teams. Preferred: Redis, ClickHouse, OpenSearch, Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes, Terraform, FinOps.
