Experienced Software Engineer

Automattic is the distributed company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and a range of other web products used across huge portions of the internet, with more than 1,500 Automatticians working from nearly every corner of the globe. We are hiring an Experienced Software Engineer to build and maintain products across WordPress, WooCommerce, Tumblr, and Automattic's growing set of AI-powered tools.

In this role you will ship code daily as part of a genuinely global engineering team, working through peer review and continuous integration with multiple deploys happening every day. This is not a slow-moving enterprise environment: Automattic's engineering culture is built around shipping quickly, iterating in public-facing products used by millions of people, and trusting engineers to own real technical decisions rather than waiting on heavy process. You will work across abstraction layers spanning legacy systems and newer architecture, so comfort moving between different parts of a large, mature codebase matters.

We are looking for someone with production experience across multiple programming languages and frameworks, and either strong proficiency in PHP and JavaScript or a genuine willingness to master them quickly, since those are core to Automattic's stack. Experience working at real scale, whether that means backend performance tuning or supporting a large and diverse user base, is important, along with strong debugging instincts and a real focus on quality rather than just shipping speed for its own sake.

The role is fully remote and open worldwide, consistent with how Automattic has operated since its founding: work from wherever you choose. Compensation is disclosed as a global range of $70,000 to $170,000 USD, paid in local currency depending on location and experience. Relocation is not supported, since the role does not require relocating in the first place. The team does get together in person for company-wide meetups roughly 3 to 4 weeks per year, which is a real, disclosed travel expectation rather than optional.
