Automattic
Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Tumblr, and other widely used web products, is hiring an Applied AI Engineer for a global remote role, with an option for in-person collaboration in New York for anyone who wants it.
Automattic has been fully distributed since long before remote work was common practice, with employees spread across dozens of countries. This role sits inside that structure, building user-facing AI features across Automattic's product portfolio rather than working on a single app.
Responsibilities:
• Develop and launch user-facing AI features across Automattic's product ecosystem, including WordPress.com, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Beeper, and Mesh
• Rapidly prototype AI ideas and scale the ones that work from concept to production
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and engineers in a mix of distributed and occasional in-person settings
• Stay current with emerging AI developments and find ways to turn them into real user-facing value
Requirements:
• Production experience shipping AI features that users actively engage with, not just internal prototypes
• Production experience with LLMs, whether through APIs or custom implementations, at meaningful scale
• Full-stack development ability, with PHP, TypeScript, and React preferred
• Ability to build and scale AI-powered interfaces, not just backend model integrations
• A product-first mindset — Automattic's own framing is that "great AI is invisible to users"
Valued but not required:
• Machine learning fundamentals and broader ML field knowledge
• Technical leadership experience on high-performing teams
• Experience with consumer AI products that reached significant user adoption
• WordPress, ecommerce, or messaging platform experience
• Open source contributions
• Startup founder or early-stage engineering background
Compensation and benefits:
• Salary range: $70,000–$170,000 USD, paid globally in local currency depending on role and location
• Competitive base salary without complex variable/bonus structures
• Fully remote work structure with an open vacation policy
• Comprehensive, country-specific benefits
What Automattic offers:
• A genuinely global remote role at a company that has operated this way for close to two decades
• The chance to ship AI features across products already used by a very large share of the web (WordPress alone powers a significant portion of all websites)
• A stated salary range rather than an opaque "competitive" placeholder, which is unusual for a role at this level
Automattic's AI work here is explicitly product-facing rather than research-facing: this role is for someone who wants to ship features people actually use, not run experiments in isolation.
To apply, submit your resume/CV, a cover letter addressing the listed experience prompts, and links to relevant portfolio work (GitHub, personal site, etc.) through the application form on Automattic's own careers page.
