About the Surf Instructor role

Surf Instructors teach beginners and intermediate surfers the fundamentals — paddling, pop-ups, wave selection, and ocean safety — usually through a surf school, resort, or independent practice in a coastal or beach-town location. Ocean knowledge and safety judgment matter as much as surfing ability itself, since a good instructor keeps beginners safe in conditions they don't yet understand.
