Typical credentials
- •CPR/First Aid certification — many camps train and certify new hires on arrival
- •Background check / child-safeguarding clearance — standard and non-negotiable for this role
- •Lifeguard certification is a strong plus if the camp has a waterfront
- •Prior experience with kids (babysitting, tutoring, coaching) counts even without formal camp experience
Resume tips for Camp Counselor applications
- •List any certifications (CPR, lifeguard, Wilderness First Aid) prominently near the top — camps filter on these first
- •Include specific activities you can instruct, not just "worked with kids"
- •Mention experience with the camp's specific format (overnight, day camp, special needs, sports-focused) if you have it
- •One page is standard; camps read hundreds of these in a short hiring window

- •Keep the tone warm rather than corporate — camp hiring staff read personality as a real qualification

Same idea — a structure to learn from, not to send as-is.
Dear Camp Director,
I'm applying for a Counselor position for this summer and I'm available for your full session, June 1 through August 20. I went to overnight camp myself for six summers before I ever worked at one, and it's the reason I know exactly what a homesick 9-year-old on night one needs to hear.
For the past two summers at Pinecrest, I've run archery and arts & crafts blocks and co-led a 10-camper cabin, so I'm used to the full day — programming, meals, lights-out, and everything in between. I'm also a certified lifeguard, which I know is useful for waterfront rotations.
I'd love to bring that same energy to your camp this summer.
Sincerely,
Taylor Morgan
