Technical Writer – PostgreSQL
Percona
Description
Percona provides open source database software, support and services across MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL and MariaDB. The company is **remote-only and globally dispersed, with colleagues in more than 50 countries**.
**The role**
You would join one of Percona's distributed open-source development teams, working on the PostgreSQL database and related components in close collaboration with the dedicated PostgreSQL team.
The job is to be Percona's voice to technical customers — producing complete, clear documentation for its PostgreSQL products, whether guides, user manuals, help files or man pages. Percona works docs-as-code, so version-controlled environments are the norm rather than a document management system.
You would be embedded in the PostgreSQL team while also working alongside the Product Documentation team, a group of technical writers building a scalable documentation strategy.
**What you will do**
- Creating all technical documentation, from install, configuration and troubleshooting guides through how-tos, user manuals, man pages and `--help` prompts
- Participating in team ceremonies, collaborating with the Engineering Manager, Product Manager, developers and QA
- Using text, markdown, images and diagrams so readers at every experience level can extract value
- **Leveraging AI tooling to draft, polish, format and refine content** — stated as part of the role, not an optional extra
- Maintaining documentation versioning and contributing to overall documentation strategy
**Your experience**
- Graduate-level written English and excellent verbal communication
- 3+ years as a technical writer, documenting complex systems for users
- Markup languages, Markdown preferred
- Installing and configuring database server software on Linux
- Docs-as-code experience; Jenkins, git, Markdown, HTML and/or JavaScript strongly recommended
- Experience leveraging AI tooling for documentation
- Comfortable on the Linux command line, and fluent with git, gcc and gdb
- Proven success working autonomously in a globally distributed organisation
- Collaborating with open source communities via mailing lists and Slack
- Jira and Notion
**What will really make you stand out**
A developer or DevOps background; a track record contributing to PostgreSQL or other open source projects; solid understanding of PostgreSQL internals; knowledge of storage engines, at-rest encryption and cloud orchestration; ability to build automated documentation testing and CI/CD pipelines for docs; experience as a conference speaker or technical blogger.
**Location and time zone — the one real constraint**
Percona states this is **remote work from home, open to worldwide candidates**. The qualifier is that the team median is **UTC-2**, and they recommend operating within **±4 hours of that baseline**.
In practice that means roughly UTC-6 to UTC+2 — comfortable from the Americas, West Africa, the UK, Portugal and much of Western Europe. Genuinely worldwide in the sense that no country is excluded, but the working rhythm favours the Atlantic band.
**Working environment**
Two details stand out:
- **Fridays are designated no-meeting days**, protected for deep work, difficult problems or learning new technologies
- Percona organises work in defined timeframes and scopes, deliberately minimising shifting priorities. Planning is collaborative across the team, Product and customer insights
The listing even walks through a typical day: mornings on writing tasks after checking Slack, email and Jira; mid-day team syncs; afternoons on forum questions, blog drafts and upstream documentation contributions. Hours are flexible around scheduled syncs.
**Benefits**
- Flexible work hours and various paid time off programmes
- All equipment for your remote office
- Funds for career development, covering external training, certifications and conferences
- Ongoing connectivity allowances
- Participation in the equity incentive plan
- Work-from-Anywhere, FlowDays, FryDays and the Percona Adventure Team
- PAVE volunteering programme and Women Transforming Technology
