Software Engineer, Backend – Distributed Systems

Camunda — the enterprise agentic orchestration platform trusted by 700+ organizations and ranked 3rd in Flexa's 2026 Most Flexible Companies — is hiring a Software Engineer for its Distributed Systems team, working fully remotely from anywhere in the world. You'll build and evolve the durable, highly available, horizontally scalable streaming platform that underpins Camunda 8's Orchestration Cluster: expanding the multi-Raft implementation, working on the SWIM-based cluster membership algorithm, and optimizing high-performance network and disk I/O pipelines. Day to day: designing and maintaining backend services for distributed streaming; leading 3+ month engineering initiatives end-to-end from problem definition through solution design and delivery; maturing disaster recovery and resilience capabilities including online backup/restore; designing developer and operator tooling for complex distributed system operations; and participating in L3 support and on-call rotations with SRE. Requires 7+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong focus on backend and/or distributed systems, and hands-on experience with highly concurrent, data-intensive software.
