Software Engineer, Backend – Data Layer

Camunda

WorldwideRemoteMidPosted 1h ago

Description

Camunda is the enterprise platform for agentic orchestration, letting organisations coordinate AI agents, people and systems across complex business processes with governance, auditability and human oversight built in. Over 700 organisations use it, including nine of the top ten US banks. The company is fully remote and global, and placed third in Flexa's 2026 Most Flexible Companies ranking.

**The role**

You would join the Data Layer team, building and evolving the storage and query layer that keeps Camunda 8's process data fast, accurate and available at scale. It spans both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, and its pipelines power everything from process monitoring through to the agent-driven automation capabilities Camunda is now rolling out.

The projects described are substantial: reshaping how process data is stored and retained, streaming data to external systems, and pushing secondary storage to perform at greater scale.

Camunda describes its engineering approach as holistic, so expect real partnership with product management, design, QA and support rather than ticket-taking.

**What you would be doing**

- Designing, building and maintaining backend services for the data layer, across relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, with correctness, performance and scale in mind
- Owning end-to-end delivery of engineering initiatives, breaking requirements into concrete solution designs with Product Management and senior colleagues
- Evolving how process data is processed, retained and exposed so customers can work with it the way they need
- Making secondary storage more performant and scalable, and building tooling that makes the data layer easier to understand, troubleshoot and operate safely in production
- Participating in L3 support and on-call rotations alongside Support and SRE, feeding what you learn back into the product

**What they are looking for**

- At least 4 years as a backend engineer with a strong focus on backend systems and production data stores
- Hands-on experience with at least one of PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, MSSQL or Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, including practical understanding of query performance, indexing and data modelling trade-offs
- A record of contributing to complex engineering initiatives and delivering reliably
- Comfort investigating slow queries, execution plans and index usage to root-cause production issues
- Strong communication in a remote-first environment, including direct feedback in code review
- Willingness to use Camunda's own product

**Nice to have**

- Workflow automation or process orchestration experience
- Experience across both relational databases and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch
- CI pipeline experience
- Familiarity with migration tooling such as Liquibase or Flyway, and schema evolution in a live system

**Compensation**

Annual Total Target Cash, combining base and full variable target, spanning the minimum in a standard market to the maximum in a major tech hub:

- United States: $119,900–$193,200
- United Kingdom: £75,300–£123,800
- Canada: C$127,300–C$209,300
- Singapore: S$148,900–S$223,300

Offers typically land in the first half of the range. Equity is available through the Virtual Stock Option Plan where applicable. Based elsewhere, you are hired through Remote.com as employer of record, with a personalised rewards calculation after the first interview.

**Benefits**

- Work from anywhere, with home office budget, co-working support and flexible time off
- Annual Kickoff (Madrid in 2026), team offsites, and a Connection Budget covering meetups while travelling
- Locally tailored healthcare and Modern Health for mental wellbeing
- Live Well Lifestyle Spending Account, launching 2026 and scaling to €1,000 a year from 2027
- Pension or retirement contributions and insurance where relevant
- Up to $/€/£1,000 a year for self-directed learning

**Two things worth knowing**

The body of the listing carries an internal **#USEAST** tag alongside #LI-Remote. Camunda does not state a timezone requirement anywhere in the visible text, but that tag suggests a US Eastern working-hours preference for this particular team. Given the role includes on-call and L3 support rotations, it is worth asking about coverage expectations early rather than assuming full timezone freedom.

Camunda also discloses that it may use AI tools to screen applications and during interviews, and publishes a scam warning: genuine contact only comes from an @camunda.com address, and they never request bank details or payment.
