Mozilla (Thunderbird) is hiring a Staff Product Engineer to build Thunderbolt, an open-source enterprise AI platform that puts users in control of their data. This is a fully remote role open to candidates residing in Canada or the United States. You will own features end to end, from concept through launch, adoption and iteration, translating product vision and enterprise requirements into technical plans and building across the full stack, including UI, APIs, services, integrations and infrastructure. The work centers on AI-powered capabilities such as chat, search, research automation and workflow features, in close partnership with product, design, engineering and open-source communities. Mozilla states that applicants must reside in and have permanent work authorization for the country locations specified in the posting (Canada or the US) and that it does not provide visa sponsorship. Compensation is 155,000 to 185,000 CAD in Canada and 185,000 to 220,000 USD in the US.

10 or more years of professional software engineering experience with Staff-level scope and impact. Full-stack engineering capability across interfaces, APIs, services, data flows and infrastructure. Demonstrated ownership of complex product features through implementation and iteration. Practical experience building AI-enabled products (LLMs, RAG, agents, model abstraction, retrieval systems) and familiarity with multiple AI tools, models and frameworks. Strong product judgment and ability to work independently in ambiguity. Understanding of software quality, testing, security, performance and reliability tradeoffs, and of enterprise software needs such as privacy, security, administration, compliance and deployment flexibility. Must reside in and hold permanent work authorization for Canada or the United States; no visa sponsorship.
