Senior Software Engineer, Backend – Engineering Operations

This role sits on the Engineering Operations team, a platform group whose users are Camunda's own engineers. The company is rebuilding itself around AI-first ways of working, and this position exists to make sure the internal development lifecycle keeps pace with that shift rather than becoming the bottleneck.

What the work involves

• Building automated processes across the Camunda 8 repositories, including AI-assisted release management, autonomous dependency updates, and proactive CVE remediation
• Improving CI and release health using measurable signals, finding and removing the bottlenecks that slow delivery down
• Partnering with engineering leaders and cross-team stakeholders to shape CI strategy and engineering standards
• Turning recurring friction points into self-sustaining systems that hold up as an AI-augmented workforce increases the volume of change moving through the pipeline

What Camunda is looking for

• Solid software engineering experience with a delivery record, ideally in Java, specialising in backend or full-stack work
• Genuine interest in operational excellence beyond feature code: CI/CD tuning, dependency management, release processes, metrics, and build performance
• Practical depth in CI tooling such as GitHub Actions, Maven, and Docker, plus scripting in Shell or Python, in complex codebases like monorepos
• A collaborative approach, since the team's influence comes through other engineers rather than direct ownership of the product
• Experience with developer experience tooling and driving AI adoption inside an engineering organisation
• Comfort with a "you build it, you run it" model
• Helpful but not required: experience designing cross-team operations, or hands-on time with Camunda or another BPMN system

Location and eligibility

The role is fully remote. Camunda hires directly in the United States, United Kingdom, and Singapore, and everywhere else through Remote.com acting as employer of record. Candidates outside the three named markets receive a personalised total rewards breakdown after the first interview.

Compensation and benefits

• Annual total cash, combining base salary and full variable component: United States $143,800–$231,900; United Kingdom £90,300–£148,500; Singapore S$178,600–S$267,900
