Networking Engineer: Proxy and Corrosion

Fly.io, the platform for running full-stack apps and databases close to users worldwide, is hiring a Networking Engineer to work on two of its core infrastructure systems: fly-proxy and Corrosion. The role is listed simply as "Anywhere."

Fly.io runs application workloads across a global fleet of physical machines, and the routing layer connecting requests to the right VM has to keep up with machines that come and go constantly — especially now, as agent-driven workloads churn through machines far faster than traditional app deployments did.

Responsibilities:

• Maintain fly-proxy, Fly.io's Anycast proxy that handles request routing across the global fleet of VM instances
• Develop Corrosion, Fly.io's distributed database that tracks fleet-wide routing state as it changes
• Work across multiple layers of the stack: BGP networking, TCP/UDP handling, HTTP/2 load balancing, and distributed systems
• Support both traditional application workloads and newer agent-based computing workloads, which churn through machines much faster
• Keep constantly-updating global routing state reliable across worldwide infrastructure

Requirements:

• Proficiency in Rust — this is the primary technical requirement for the role
• Comfort working in complex, large codebases spanning distributed systems across multiple continents
• Ability to reason across very different technical layers at once, from BGP routing down to individual TCP connections
• Strong analytical skills for evaluating architectural tradeoffs
• An operational mindset that prioritizes reliability and long-term maintainability
• A solid understanding of how distributed systems fail, and how to design around that
