Staff Database Reliability Engineer – PostgreSQL

Description

Stream — the real-time chat, video, and activity feed platform powering apps like Strava, Bumble, and Patreon at billions of API requests per month — is hiring a hands-on Staff Database Reliability Engineer to own a fleet of 35–40 PostgreSQL databases (largest at 15TB) as the company migrates from AWS RDS to self-hosted Postgres on Kubernetes. Based in Amsterdam or fully remote from anywhere in Europe, this high-impact engineering role involves deep query planning, vacuum and bloat management, sharding real OLTP workloads, designing backup and HA systems from scratch, and collaborating directly with application engineers to connect database behaviour to real access patterns. Stream provides visa sponsorship and relocation support for candidates moving to the Amsterdam office. Deep PostgreSQL internals knowledge — MVCC, autovacuum, the query planner — prior self-managed database ownership outside managed services, real sharding experience, and an engineering mindset that connects database behaviour to application code are all required; familiarity with CloudNativePG, CockroachDB, or logical replication is a strong plus.
